Xylitol (scientifically: pentanepentol) has been established in Finland since the end of the 20th century. Xylitol is able to inhibit the growth of the Streptococcus mutans bacterium responsible for tooth decay. The Streptococcus mutans cannot metabolize xylitol and is therefore starved.

Xylitol also promotes salivation. Saliva contains calcium phosphate, which is responsible for the formation and hardening of tooth enamel. In addition, xylitol can support the remineralization of the tooth surface.

How is xylitol used?

In order for xylitol to develop its full effect, the chewable tablets should be used after every meal, because when we eat, bacteria from sugar and carbohydrate residues in our mouth produce acid that attacks the tooth enamel. It takes up to 45 minutes for the saliva to neutralize this acid. Caries can develop during this time. Xylitol can intervene here and prevent the formation of acid.

The xylitol tablets should remain in the mouth for three to five minutes so that they can take effect. They have a pleasant cooling effect, which users find very positive.
