The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) was voted medicinal plant of the year in 2008 at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Würzburg.
The tree, also known as Common horse chestnut is native to the Balkans and common in Central Europe.
Ingredients of the horse chestnut
From a health perspective, the most important ingredient in the horse chestnut is the saponin aescin (also: "aesculus saponin" or "aesculin").
The seeds of the horse chestnut also contain a number of valuable ingredients such as triterpene -Saponins, flavonoids, tannins, vitamins B and C, minerals and essential oil. Other substances contained are starch, sugar, proteins and flavones.
