L-Methionine: essential amino acid
The sulfur-containing amino acid L-methionine is essential for the human body. It serves the body as an important supplier of sulphur, hence the characteristic, sulphurous smell.
Methionine is the precursor of cysteine and taurine and is necessary for their synthesis. Furthermore, the organism is dependent on the supply of L-methionine with food because it cannot produce it itself.
