Berberine is a natural plant substance that occurs in various plant species and is known above all for its intense yellow colour. Chemically, berberine belongs to the group of isoquinoline alkaloids. The best-known natural sources include various species of barberry, including Berberis aristata, which is originally native to the mountain regions of the Himalayas. Plants containing berberine have a long history in traditional Asian herbal lore and are also studied scientifically today because of their special ingredients.
A special feature of berberine is its striking yellow colour. This plant substance occurs mainly in certain root and bark components and can give them a strong golden-yellow colour. Berberine was therefore also used in the past as a natural dye. Unlike many well-known plant pigments, it does not belong to the carotenoids or flavonoids but to the alkaloids. This large group of substances includes numerous chemically different plant compounds, including caffeine, for example.
The diversity of the barberry family is particularly interesting. The Berberidaceae family includes various shrubs and herbaceous plants found in Europe, Asia and other regions of the world. WONDERFUL SUPPLEMENT
I\'ve taken Berberine 500 for the past 10 years but in the USA. Now I live in Spain and Fairvital is the only reliable source of a 5 star product.
