Many people deal with the topic of hair growth at some point in their lives. However, achieving the desired results does not have to be frustrating.

If you look at the ingredients of many hair care products, you often discover the common component biotin. Often also called vitamin B7 or vitamin H, biotin has an excellent reputation for ensuring beautiful and healthy hair. But how exactly does the vitamin work and does it keep what it promises?

What is biotin?

Biotin offers many benefits for our body. It contributes to a normal energy metabolism and helps to release energy from fat, carbohydrates, and protein.

Biotin is also known as vitamin H, vitamin B7, or co-enzyme R. The substance belongs to the family of water-soluble B vitamins. Biotin contributes to a normal function of the nervous system and normal psychological function.
But the nutrient is also extremely popular as a beauty vitamin. Biotin supports the maintenance of healthy skin and hair. Another advantage of the all-rounder vitamin: it contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes.

Possible benefits of biotin for hair

Biotin is credited with numerous positive effects on the hair:
  • Improvement of the hair structure
  • Shiny hair
  • Increased resilience
  • Increased hair growth
  • New formation of hair roots
  • Reversal of hair loss
  • Thickening of fine hair
  • Repair of styling damage from bleaching and styling devices

Due to its importance for skin and hair as well as its role in keratin formation, biotin is undoubtedly important for the health and appearance of our hair. However, the benefits just mentioned are not scientifically proven. There are also no findings that can be regarded as certain that a biotin intake beyond normal requirements has beneficial effects on the hair structure.

Occurrence of biotin

Biotin is a naturally occurring vitamin. It can be taken in through food. However, for a sufficient biotin intake, several different biotin-rich foods are necessary every day. Natural biotin sources are:
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Nuts
  • Lentils
  • Avocados
  • Dairy products
  • Bananas

Since biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, care should be taken when preparing biotin-rich foods not to wash or soak them for too long and to use the cooking water if possible.

Supplements

If sufficient intake through food is difficult, the use of biotin dietary supplements can be useful.

Biotin can only be stored by our organism to a small extent, which is why regular intake is important. Excess biotin that the body can no longer absorb or directly utilize is simply excreted naturally.
