Selen gehört zu den essenziellen Spurenelementen und wird im Körper in bestimmte Selenoproteine eingebaut. Die Selengehalte pflanzlicher Lebensmittel hängen auch vom jeweiligen Boden ab. Fisch, Fleisch und einige Nüsse können zur Versorgung beitragen.
Eine wichtige Rolle übernehmen selenabhängige Enzyme, die bei der Regulation von Oxidationsprozessen und dem Stoffwechsel von Schilddrüsenhormonen mitwirken. Selen trägt zu einer normalen Schilddrüsenfunktion, zur Erhaltung normaler Haare und Nägel sowie zum Schutz der Zellen vor oxidativem Stress bei.
