Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, belongs to the group of water-soluble B vitamins and is involved in numerous processes in human metabolism. It is known above all for its importance for energy-yielding metabolism, the nervous system and the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes. Natural sources include dairy products, eggs, meat, almonds, mushrooms and green leafy vegetables. The name riboflavin refers to the vitamin's chemical structure and its characteristic yellow colour.
A special feature of riboflavin is its intense yellow colour. The vitamin belongs to the flavins and can even fluoresce under ultraviolet light. This property is also known from the laboratory, where riboflavin can be studied on the basis of its reactions to light. While vitamin B2 is comparatively stable to heat, it is sensitive to light. This is why riboflavin-rich foods such as milk are often stored in light-proof packaging.
In the body, vitamin B2 is needed to form the two coenzymes FMN (flavin mononucleotide) and FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide). Both are involved in numerous enzymatic reactions in which electrons are transferred. This function is particularly important for energy-yielding metabolism, as the corresponding enzymes are involved, among other things, in processing carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The normal function of the mitochondria is also closely linked to these reactions.
Riboflavin-5-phosphate is the phosphorylated form of riboflavin and corresponds to the coenzyme FMN. This compound is often referred to as the active form of vitamin B2. In the digestive tract, it can first be converted into riboflavin before absorption, from which the body then forms the coenzyme forms it needs. Vitamin B2 also contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and normal red blood cells and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Fühle mich wacher
Ich wollte meine Nährstoffauswahl gezielter zusammenstellen statt einfach immer neue Kombiprodukte zu kaufen. Für meine Entscheidung waren die Bereiche Energiehaushalt und Müdigkeit am spannendsten.
