L-carnitine is a vitamin-like compound that the body can produce with the involvement of the amino acids lysine and methionine. It occurs naturally especially in animal foods; larger amounts are found in muscle and heart tissue.

In metabolism, carnitine is part of a transport system for long-chain fatty acids. This supports their transfer into the mitochondria, where they can be processed further. Acetyl-L-carnitine also has an acetyl group and thus differs in some chemical properties.
