L-ornithine is a non-protein-forming amino acid and a component of the urea cycle. The body uses this metabolic pathway to process nitrogen compounds produced during the breakdown of amino acids.
In the urea cycle, ornithine is repeatedly converted and regenerated. It is closely related to citrulline and arginine. These three compounds show how closely individual amino acid metabolic pathways are interlinked.
L-arginine is a protein-forming amino acid that is both obtained from food and produced in the body. It occurs, for example, in nuts, seeds, pulses and animal protein sources. Arginine has several special tasks within metabolism.
One of the best known is the formation of nitric oxide (NO): this small signalling molecule is produced enzymatically from L-arginine. Arginine is also part of the urea cycle, in which nitrogen from amino acid breakdown is processed. The compounds arginine hydrochloride and arginine alpha-ketoglutarate are different forms of the raw material.

Nach dem Proteinshake wollte ich irgendwann wissen, was mit dem Stickstoff passiert
Bei eiweißreicher Ernährung denkt man meistens nur an Muskeln und Regeneration. Mich hat irgendwann interessiert, was der Körper mit den stickstoffhaltigen Abbauprodukten eigentlich macht. Dabei bin ich auf den Harnstoffzyklus und auf Arginin und Ornithin gestoßen.
