Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme, which occurs is many biological systems. The antioxidant effect is similar to that of glutathione and vitamin C.SOD belongs to the enzyme group of metalloproteases. It is an important component in the cellular metabolism and essential for the neutralisation of superoxides, which arise in the context of the natural cellular metabolism.
SOD is also part of the protective mechanism against toxic substances such as mercury and mercury metal compounds. Increased SOD activities were detected in workers with a chronic mercury exposure. The extent of SOD activity correlated with the mercury exposure.
