Ashwagandha is one of the most commonly used remedies in Ayurveda because of its versatility and good tolerability. Its importance for Ayurvedic medicine can be compared to that of ginseng for Chinese medicine.
In historical Indian writings, Ashwagandha was described as a miracle cure and the plant has been known in Europe since the 16th century. Their natural home ranges from the Middle East across Africa to China. Experts assume that it first appeared in North Africa and slowly spread from there.
Significant ingredients of Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha roots contain various alkaloids such as anaferine, anahygrine, cuscohygrine, nicotine, tropine and withasomnine. They also contain withanolides such as somniferanolide, somniwithanolide, withaferin A and withasomniferanolide.
High-quality Ashwagandha extracts are standardized to contain at least 2.5% withanolides. By specifying the content of withanolidene, the various dietary supplements on the market can be compared with one another. If this information about the ingredients is missing for a product, one can assume a low content of active ingredients.
The Ashwagandha capsules from Fairvital are standardized to 5% withanolides . With a daily consumption of two capsules, this corresponds to 50mg per day.
