Lycopene from tomatoes

This food supplement by Fairvital provides you with high-dose lycopene combined with vitamin E. One capsule contains 500mg of lycopene beadlets standardised to contain 5% lycopene from tomatoes, which is equivalent to 25mg lycopene. One capsule also contains 6mg (9 I.U.) of vitamin E in the form of D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate (provitamin E).
The beadlets form means that lycopene is particularly well protected from oxidation by oxygen and retains its properties longer than lycopene, which has not been microencapsulated.

Strong antioxidants

Lycopene belongs to the group of carotenoids. Carotenoids are fat-soluble, natural pigments in plants that form them to protect the chlorophyll from oxidation. Chlorophyll is in turn needed for photosynthesis, which plants use to produce oxygen, among other things. For this reason, carotenoids such as lycopene have strong antioxidant properties.
Lycopene owes its name to the tomatoes in which it is found in high quantities. The scientific name of the tomato is Solanum lycopersicum.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and also has antioxidant properties that support cell protection. It supports the catching and neutralisation of the so-called free radicals which, due to various circumstances, are produced in the organism and can damage cells. An excess of free radicals is known as oxidative stress.
The form of vitamin E in this product, D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, is a provitamin. It means that the body can convert it into vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) when needed.

Lycopene in food

The carotenoid is mainly found in tomatoes, where it gives them their red colour, but lycopene is also found in significant amounts in rosehips, guavas, watermelons and apricots.
It is interesting to know that tomato products such as tomato juice, tomato paste, tomato sauce or ketchup have a higher lycopene content than fresh tomatoes and therefore have a higher bioavailability. The reason for this is the release of lycopene during processing.
Alternatively, taking food supplements containing lycopene can be a good idea.

Vitamin E in food

High levels of vitamin E are found primarily in plant foods, with various oils being particularly prominent: wheat germ oil, corn germ oil, soybean oil, olive oil and flaxseed oil. Margarine can also help to cover daily vitamin E requirements.
Another good source of vitamin E are nuts like walnuts or Brazil nuts.
Animal sources include mainly fish: lobster, mackerel, redfish and trout.
